A dog is an extension of the family. Let’s face it — a dog may be the most loved member of a family. Dogs give unconditional love, are always jumping at the door when you arrive home and are sad to see you leave. So what do you do when you leave the house? You take them with you!

It’s most important to keep your pet safe, even while you are on the road. The Humane Society offers the following tips to keep your pet safe while driving:

1. Please don’t treat your dog like a pile of mulch or a lawnmower. They do not belong in the back of your truck. Would you allow your children to stand in the bed of your Silverado, while you’re heading 60 mph down the highway? I thought not.

2. Do not leave your pet unattended in your vehicle for any amount of time. It heats up fast. In the summertime, your car can spike 120 degrees within minutes. Even if it’s a couple minutes, bring a leash …
