Mother of a King

Whenever a man rises to greatness, I often wonder about his mother. The woman behind the greatness.

The one who wiped away tears, gave kisses goodnight, taught him to say please and thank you and helped him find his voice.

Alberta Williams King raised a man who stood up for his beliefs. She taught her children the value of education despite being banned from teaching even though she had earned her certificate. They knew how to read before they even started school.

She taught him endurance and strength to endure the humiliation and brutality he was subjected to during his quest for equality.

The thing I love most about babies is the potential. Henry could be anything someday. I only hope I have the strength and wisdom as his mother to arm him with the right morals and strength of character to do great things.

So today while we celebrate and remember a courageous man, we should also remember his mother (and father) who laid the foundation for greatness.

LWTK’s mommy blogger, Sarah, is attempting to be a good mama to little Henry, wife to Shea, full-time employee and part-time grad student all while avoiding making dinner from a box every night. In her non-existent free time, she’s running, eating popcorn and blogging about it all at The Gatsby Diaries.
