let it snow

Little red Mustang covered in snow.

As I write this, the first winter storm of the season is upon us.

We recently moved into a house with a steep driveway that opens up onto a fairly busy street. The bags of salt and shovel are stacked at the front of the garage, ready for battle. Though it seems Kansas City doesn’t get as much snow as it used to, the days when Gary Lezak dominates the morning news of a slick morning commute, my anxiety rises. That first storm of the winter is always the worst as drivers remember what it’s like to drive in the fluffy white stuff again.

I always flash back to a snowy highway on the border of Minnesota and Iowa when a gust of blizzard wind pushed my little red Mustang into a ditch, just inches away from the corner of a semi barreling toward me. As a tow truck driver was attempting to save me, a car slipped off the road and into his truck. I arrived a few hours later at a hotel, unharmed but shaking for days.

I feel like I’ve mastered the art of driving slow, not caring what speedy four-wheel driver behind me thinks and braking a block before I really want to stop.

How do you feel about driving in the snow? Do past experiences make you nervous or do you welcome the challenge?
