5 Great Cars for Teens

Ahhh, your first car. So many memories go along with whatever car you drive when you first get your license. Your first car gives you countless first-time experiences, from driving to the mall to weekends at the drive-in movie theater.

However, whether you’re a generous parent or a hard-working teen, there are special considerations that go along with that first car choice. The first few years of driving are really about developing good driving habits, and sometimes teens have to learn the hard way! So most people agree that teens should be driving a safe, relatively inexpensive car that gets good gas mileage (after all, joyrides are the best when you’re a newbie driver!).

I’ve gathered a list of five cars that meet all of those expectations: they’re safe, low in price and can get you pretty far on a full tank of gas. Read on to see my car picks for teenage drivers:

1. Toyota CorollaScreen Shot 2014-08-02 at 4.07.30 PM

The Toyota Corolla has a long-standing reputation as a reliable, safe car for people of all ages. So why wouldn’t you want one for your teenager? This car is priced at about $18,000 and will keep running well into a teen’s adulthood!

2. Hyundai Sonata GLS

Though this car is a sedan, it’s on the larger side, meaning that it will provide plenty of protection in the event of an accident. It’s about $20,000 and is packed with extra features that teens enjoy, such as satellite radio and an iPod interface.

3. Chevrolet Malibu LS

Like the Hyundai Sonata, the Malibu is a larger size that makes it a great, safe option for teens. It’s also known to be a reliable car and has convenient features like keyless entry and a touch-screen interface built in.

4. Toyota CamryScreen Shot 2014-08-02 at 6.30.17 PM

This mid-size sedan is newly designed to feature a wider body, which improves handling and safety on the road. Still, the car gets relatively impressive gas mileage at 25-35 mpg.

5. Hyundai Accent

With overhead and side airbags, electronic stability and driveline traction control, the Hyundai accent is a great choice for beginning drivers. This sedan gets 27-38 mpg and is priced at a friendly $14,000.
