Have you ever been to another country and noticed that they have totally different cars on the road? Or that the most popular cars are fairly scarce in America?
I’ve always wondered which cars are most frequently purchased and driven in other countries, and how they compare to the U.S. So I did some research and was surprise with what I found! I randomly sampled countries and continents and they vastly differed from both the United States and from each other.
I know present…the best-selling cars around the world!
1. America: To set the stage, let’s start with the good ol’ U.S. of A! In our own country, the Ford F-Series (pictured above) was the most purchased car last year, followed by the Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram. Trucks dominate! Two sedans follow up the top three trucks: the Toyota Camry and the Honda Civic, of course!
2. India: In India, the best-selling car is one I’d never even heard of: the a! It’s made by Suzuki and is the perfect little compact car for the busy streets of India! Other top sellers include the Maruti Wagon R, the Maruti Swift Dzire and the Hyundai Grand i10. Suzuki definitely dominates the market!
3. Europe: I’ve grouped together all of Europe, because the car market doesn’t differ a ton from country to country across this continent. Volkswagen is by far Europe’s most popular car manufacturer…no surprise there! What IS surprising is the American-made Ford is the next most popular manufacturer in Europe! Cars from Audi, BMW and Fiat were also in the top 10.
4. Australia: The Mazda3 is one of the top-selling cars in the land down under (pictured above), as the most popular car sold in 2012. The Toyota Camry and the Toyota HiLux were also in the top three, followed by a model known as the Holden Cruze (the Chevy Cruze, as it’s called in America!)
5. China: Ford also has a huge presence in China, with the Ford Focus being the most popular car on the mainland! The Volkswagen Lavida is the next most popular, followed by the Buick Excell. The Buick seems to be making a comeback in America lately, so maybe the Chinese are on to something!
6. Mexico: Nissan dominates the market in Mexico, but the best-selling car is actually the Chevrolet Aveo (pictured above). The next two on the list are common cars in America, too: the Nissan Versa and Honda CR-V!
7. Canada: It’s not much of a surprise, but the Ford F-Series (American’s most popular car) is also Canada’s best-seller! Dodge Ram and Honda Civic are also in the top three…so, looks like Canadians and Americans are more alike than we think!
