There’s one type of vehicle we haven’t yet talked about on Lauren Wants to Know: moving vans! And while I don’t think it’s necessary to delve into the details of the vehicles themselves, I do think moving is one thing everyone needs to learn more about at some time or another.
Hence, I’ve put together this post explaining all the essentials of moving long-distance. (Or anywhere other than a few streets down.)
It turns out there are quite a few options out there, and while one way might work great for one person, it might not be the smartest option for another person. So read on to find out what solution would be best for you!
1. Use a storage container company. This option seems to be very popular at the moment, because it’s a mix of DIY moving and hired movers at an affordable price point. With a storage container company (like Pods) you have a ton of flexibility because you can have your possessions stored in the container you load them up in, then have them delivered by the moving company wherever you might want them dropped off. No worries about driving the van or doing everything at the last minute. And you can even take time to find a place to live at your destination, since your stuff can stay in the storage container for as long as you want to pay for it.
2. Rent moving truck + tow your vehicle. This is the classic moving style most of us think of. You rent a truck (like a UHaul), pack up your belongings, hook your car up to the hitch of the truck and then tow all your stuff across the country to your new home. This option requires almost 100% DIY efforts, but it can be affordable and convenient for those who don’t want to deal with putting miles on their car for the move.
3. Rent moving truck + ship your vehicle. If you have a bit more money to work with, you could also ship your vehicle to your new home. This means your car will arrive at the destination via boat or plane, while you drive the moving truck.
3. Hire professional movers. This route is the ultimate luxury, but it’s also the most expensive option. When you hire movers, they will come and pack up all your possessions for you, label them in boxes, load them in the truck and drive them to your destination. Some people get this option through their company, if a new position requires them to relocate. But if you absolutely dread moving, this might be a good option for you!
4. Ship your possessions. Of course, if you don’t have a ton of stuff to relocate, you could always have your belongings shipped to your destination while you drive or fly there. Some people might even consider selling their big items like couches and beds, then shipping the rest. If you’re a single person without a big furniture investment, this is one of the most hassle-free ways to do it!
