If you ever come out to a snow and ice-covered car, you’ve probably experienced the struggle of opening a frozen door. Snow melts into the cracks in your doors and as temperatures get colder, that water turns to ice and you’re stuck on the outside pulling with all of your might.
There are several ways to avoid this situation. Many places offer expensive sprays you can put on your door; however you can often use things around the house to prevent freezing.
One method is cooking spray! If you have pam or an oil cooking spray around the house, try spraying it onto a paper towel (to avoid getting cooking spray everywhere) and wiping the rubber parts of your doors. You want to eliminate any condensation getting inside of your doors and freezing to the rubber, so try something that will not react to the rubber. Avoid WD-40 or Vaseline.
If you come out and your car door is already frozen shut, you want to avoid breaking your car handles. Scrape as much of the ice off as possible. Try pouring lukewarm water over the door handle, and if you are still having troubles try a commercial de-icer. Drive safely!
