Cars were the new thing in the 1920’s, and the stars of Hollywood were in love with the freedom they brought. One of these Hollywood stars who had a need for speed was Clara Bow. At one time she was the “It” girl of the big screen by day, and at night a racer with a passion for automobiles.
Clara was a very talented actress that came from severe poverty. When she was young she won a photo contest for a part in a movie called Beyond the Rainbow. After that, Clara’s career took off. Over time she found a new love in going fast. Her vehicle of choice? The flashiest car at the time: the 1927 LaSalle, in a deep red.
Clara was known for disappearing from the city for days at a time in search of open spaces away from the overcrowded city. She was quoted once saying, “I can’t get a car that will drive fast enough.” Most cars at the time couldn’t go faster than 75 miles an hour, so I can see her frustration! Clara owned many other beautiful cars. She had a nervous breakdown in 1931 and left Hollywood, and some very beautiful vehicles (such as a ‘14 Stanley Steamer) that were stolen and never recovered!
