Get your bike on!

As gas prices inch toward $4 in the metro area, are you considering altering your routine to cut back on fuel costs? Money talks, so I’m combining my errand trips and carpooling with the hubs to work.

And come summer time, I am even considering biking to work. For some, that alternative is becoming a more realistic possibility. Construction will begin this summer on the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail, which will eventually connect Overland Park, Kansas City, Kan., and downtown. The trail already exists in pieces both on and off road. But after the trail is complete, bike commuters will be able to travel safely, off-road.

The seven-mile Trolley Track Trail (Westport to Waldo) connects my house and workplace. Some days, I think I could give up my car to commute and exercise in one shot. Other times I think that sounds like a logistical nightmare, and perhaps I’ll just use the trail for runs with the jogging stroller.

Looking for a trail in your area? The Mid-America Regional Council has bike trail maps as well as safety tips and other resources to cut back on using your car.
