The Grass is Greener on the Other Side

Horns honking, red lights flashing, and people yelling; commuting can be a stressful time. I know from experience, when you’re put in a bad mood during your morning commute, it can affect the rest of your day.

Can there be a less stressful alternative?

That is the question Ohio State University students asked, as they tried to find a more peaceful way to commute.

They did a study involving 106 college students, each viewing videotapes of different landscapes. The landscape videos varied from wooded areas, six-lane highways, and city streets. Before the college students were shown the videos, they had to perform a difficult 10-minute test, that would increase their stress levels. They were also asked to perform an anger test, before and after the video, to measure out their anger levels.

How do you think the results turned out?

With no surprise, the college students who viewed the scenic parkway video showed lower levels of anger and frustration.

Now the next time you’re driving try taking the scenic route. You will feel less stressed and ready to tackle your day!
