If you’re anything like me, you understand the nagging fear that one day you might be cruising down the highway and something will go terribly wrong with your car. You will have to pull off to the side of road and try not to succumb to a full-on panic attack.
In the best case scenario, you’re in a fairly populated area and AAA is already on their way to rescue you. Assuming this is not the best case scenario, here are some tips to make it through safe and untraumatized:
Remain calm. If you let yourself fall into a panic, you could end up making things worse. Take some deep breaths, drink water, and remind yourself that you are a totally capable human being and you can handle this.
Make sure your vehicle is as far away from other vehicles as possible. If you are unable to move to the side of the road and you’re sitting in the middle of the highway, do not leave your vehicle. It is much safer than trying to run across a busy highway.
Turn your hazards on to help other drivers see you. Remember that even with your hazards on in broad daylight, people can still miss you.
Try to figure out the problem. The two most common reasons that cars break down are flat tires or an overheating engine. Keep an eye on your temperature gauge, especially in the summer On long road trips, make sure you check your tire pressure often. Both of these problems can potentially be fixed without having to call an expensive tow truck.
Call for help. If you can’t figure out the problem or if you’re in a dangerous situation, call for help. Don’t put yourself in at risk.
Unfortunately, there is a good chance that you will be stuck on the side of the road at least once in your life. As long as you take precautions in advance and remain calm when it happens, everything will work out.
