I think we have all heard those elite car enthusiasts ranting about the wonders of the manual transmission and its decline. Most people admit that driving a stick shift is more fun and engaging, but I wanted to find out why this group of enthusiasts swear by it. Why does everyone love a manual?
Its worldwide. Believe it or not, having an automatic is considered a luxury in some countries, including most of Europe. The price of a manual, as well as the price of insurance, is usually higher than its automatic counterpart. Anyone who can drive a stick has felt the frustration of those poor souls on The Amazing Race who are in a different country, with a million dollars on the line, and can’t get out of first.
It keeps you focused. I’ve heard and read this a thousand times. While I believe this is true to a certain extent, I have had one too many experiences sitting shotgun while my friend tries to shift, turn, hold onto their coffee, and change the radio station all at the same time, with me seeing my life flash before my eyes. So, while a manual may deter multitasking, it does not prevent it.
A manual transmission is often associated with faster cars. Most of those who choose to drive high-end cars, prefer those cars to be manual. There are several models out there that only offer three pedals, such as the Dodge Viper SRT or the Audi TT RS. However, there is word that the newest 2016 Audi TT RS will fall to the world of standard automatics.
Finally, it’s more fun and it’s more engaging. It keeps you on your toes and you have more control over the massive amount of metal and gears you’re barreling down the highway. Almost every car enthusiast you talk to will tell you that they just have more fun driving a stick-shift vehicle. Maybe it has something to do with how the car drives or maybe it has something to do with the nostalgia that comes with the three pedals.
