During the month of April, the Kansas City Health & Wellmobile—along with hundreds of autism organizations around the world—strives to raise awareness of autism and the people around the world living with ASDs (Autism Spectrum Disorders).
National Autism Awareness month was founded in 1970 by the Autism Society in an effort to fund research and educate the population on the complexity of ASD.
The term “autism” describes a wide variety of developmental brain disorders, also known as autism spectrum disorders, that are caused by a combination of genes and environmental factors. ASDs can range from very mild to extremely severe, potentially resulting in difficulty communicating, repetitive behaviors, and social and behavioral challenges. As many as 1 in 68 children in the United States are somewhere on the autism spectrum.
So how can you help? Health & Wellmobile encourages you to use social media, get involved with your local organizations, become an Autism Society advocate or affiliate, or donate to the Autism Society. Together, we can help close the divide.
Here are just a few of the many Kansas City events supporting autism awareness efforts:
4/30 – 8th Annual Walk for Autism Awareness
6/6 – 2016 Kansas City Autism Training Center Classic
9/24 – Autism Speaks Walk
