Maintaining a car can seem stressful if you don’t know the proper issues to watch for. Although there are several things to keep in mind, these four items are some of the most important. If your car care checklist includes the below information, you are on the road to success!
Battery – Ensure the battery cable connections are tight and the terminals are free from corrosion. If the battery is more than three years old, it’s a good idea to have it tested to determine how much life it has left. Better safe than stranded!
Oil Change – Many motorists believe their car’s oil should be changed every 3,000 miles… and with many mechanics still perpetuating this rule, I don’t blame you. However, newer model vehicles (2005+) can now go 5,000-7,000 miles between oil changes with no effect on your vehicle. Don’t be bamboozled into replacing perfectly good oil!
Wiper Blades – Wiper blades should completely clear the glass with each swipe. Make sure the windshield washer reservoir is filled and that your wiper blades are clean and fit properly.
Tires – Check tire pressures and tread depth. Check the pressure on all the tires with a quality gauge, especially when the tires are cold. Winter weather may cause your pressure to drop, while summer weather may cause your pressure to increase. Overinflation can cause just as much trouble as underinflation! Be sure to look for recommended pressure on the driver’s door jamb and NOT the tire wall.
