Having a car is great, but one of the downsides is the constant need to make trips to the nearest gas station to refuel it. It gets even more frustrating when gas prices are constantly fluctuating. Fortunately, there are some ways you can save fuel and lessen the frequency of your trips to the gas station.
1. Drop the Unnecessary Weight
Check your trunk and get rid of the golf clubs, bags, and etc. that are essentially cluttering it and causing an unnecessary weight on your car. When there is more weight on your car it has to move around more fuel to make up for it.
2. Keep Your Tire Pressure in Good Condition
Did you know that by keeping your tires properly inflated and aligned you are reducing the amount of drag your engine needs and simultaneously saving fuel? Keeping your tire pressure in check could help you reduce fuel usage by up to 10%!
3. Change Your Air Filter and Oil Regularly
Making sure to get your air filter cleaned and replaced regularly can improve your gas mileage by as much as 10%, while getting an oil change and tune up can improve your mileage by up to 4%.
4. Drive Slower
Driving at high speeds can increase your fuel use and emissions. Try reducing your highway speed by 5 mph. This could potentially save you 14 cents and/or lower fuel consumption by 7%.
5. Avoid Rush Hour (If Possible)
As if there weren’t already many reasons to dread rush hour traffic. Sadly, by sitting idly in your vehicle you are wasting gas. If at all possible, try to avoid rush hour by leaving 30 minutes earlier and/or later.
